More than 13 million people in the United States suffer from incontinence. The number includes the elderly, of course, but also a younger demographic, both male and female. Women, however, experience incontinence twice as often as men. The difference is caused by changes to the female body related to pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, as well as how the basic structure of the female urinary tract manages flow.
Urinary incontinence can result from normal functions – coughing, laughing, sneezing, or doing exercise. This type is considered stress incontinence, because the activities performed creating pressure on the urinary tract, which involuntarily forces urine out. According to WebMD, stress incontinence can be caused by childbirth, weight gain, or other conditions that stretch the pelvic floor muscles. When these muscles can’t support the female bladder properly, it drops down, disallowing the tightening of muscles that close off the urethra and causing urine to leak due to the extra pressure on the bladder.
Another type, called urge incontinence, is characterized by a sudden, uncontrollable need to go to the bathroom, and is caused by an overactive bladder muscle that pushes urine out of the bladder. It may be caused by irritation of the bladder, emotional stress, or certain brain conditions – though often the cause remains unknown.
