Symbius is proud to sponsor several organizations providing great service and support to our customers in Arizona. One such organization is the Arizona Spinal Cord Injury Association, which offers education and myriad resources to those living with spinal cord injury in the Phoenix area.
Founded in 1999, the Arizona Spinal Cord Injury Association is a nonprofit corporation guided by a Board of Directors consisting of individuals with spinal cord injury, family members of those with spinal cord injury, and professionals working in related fields. Dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with spinal cord injuries, the organization’s goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional and social recovery.
The association focuses on peer support, family support, and education of consumers, families, caregivers and professionals, with a priority to link consumers and families with vocational, social and recreational resources. Relying largely on sources of funding from sources like the Arizona Governor’s Council on Spinal and Head Injuries and other grants, the organization also receives support from sponsors, members, and private donors.
The Arizona Spinal Cord Injury Association provides countless resources, especially in the area of training and education. Specifically, the organization offers two or more classes per month for individuals facing paralysis and spinal cord injuries, in topics including:
- Independent living skills
- Quality of life
- Information and referral
- Healthy living
- Secondary condition prevention
The organization also prioritizes training in wheelchair skills, which are vital as they help prevent secondary conditions or isolation due to an inability to navigate one’s environment. The premise behind offering these courses is that, with shorter hospital and rehabilitation stays being the norm, patients may not have enough time to learn the wheelchair or life skills necessary to navigate a new and unexpected change. Additionally, changes associated with aging may require fine-tuning of old skills, or adaptation with new skills to remain independent.
AzSCIA hosts two educational conferences annually, and offers the Spinal Cord Peer Mentoring Program to assists individuals who have experienced the trauma of spinal cord injury. This program serves to help facilitate the long process of healing and readjustment to help others in similar situations. AzSCIA organizes two or more social or recreational activities per month, such as accessible sports and sporting events throughout Arizona, support group mixers, holiday events, and other activities that encourage healthy living, sports, fitness, nature and re-engaging in to the community, in a manner that is similar to that prior to injury.
Finally, the AzSCIA Transportation Program offers the convenience of door-to-door service in an air-conditioned, easily-accessible van, with drivers certified in CPR, First Aid, and defensive-driving trained. Vans can be leased or rented, and are available for “contract” transportation for not-for-profit organizations.
Finally, the AzSCIA serves as a liaison for a number of support groups throughout Arizona:
