Summertime is the season for fun in the sun, beaches, and watersports—most of which require a bathing suit. For men and women living with an ostomy, stripping down can be daunting, even embarrassing. While increasingly common, ostomies still carry a stigma.
An ostomy refers to a surgically created opening in the body designed to discharge the body’s waste. A stoma is the actual end of the ureter or small or large intestine that has been rerouted through the abdominal wall and protrudes from the skin. The United Ostomy Association estimates that slightly more than 750,000 Americans now have some type of stoma. Each year approximately 120,000 people will undergo ostomy surgery.
With ostomies on the rise, so is acceptance. In March 2014, The National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (NACC) launched the #GetYourBellyOut campaign to raise awareness of Inflammatory Bowel Disease across social media. And more recently, a 23 year old from the United Kingdom shared a photo that went viral. The image was of the woman sunbathing in Mexico, stoma and all. With 10 million people and 200,000 Facebook likes within a matter of days, the image was accompanied by the caption “After three and a half years, I decided that my colostomy bags shouldn’t control my life. So when I went to Mexico with my husband in December last year I finally showed I wasn’t ashamed.”
